6 1960s No spilling: NUK launches bottles with a wide opening for milk powder and also makes them leakproof with a screw cap. 1950s How it all began: Dentists Wilhelm Balters and Adolf Müller developed the natural shape which is right for the jaw for sooth- ers and teats and thus revolutionized the world of baby products. The NUK brand was born. 1970s NUK develops the teat with a vent. This means the end of tummy pain for babies as a result of swallow- ing air during drink- ing. The NUK brand is already represented with products in more than 48 countries. 1980s The colourful eight- ies: The invention of the NUK Breast Pump makes the day-to-day routine easier for mothers who breastfeed. Baby’s first teeth are cared for with NUK Baby Tooth- brushes. two dentists discovered back then that babies who had been breastfed were less likely to have misaligned teeth than children who had been bottle-fed. the reason: the mother’s breast was the perfect fit for the inside of the child’s mouth. As a result, a teat was designed which is modelled on a mother’s nipple as she breastfeeds, one which was natural and orthodontic, in German “natürlich und kiefergerecht”. the revolutionary key features of the product are still reflected in the brand name today: nuK is composed of the german words above. Where did it go from there? In the 1960s, it became possible to produce nutritious baby formula from milk powder. nuK introduced a bot- tle with a wider opening for easier filling. this was followed a short time later by the screw cap, which made spill-proof shaking and transport of milk possible. In the 1970s, it became increasingly important to ensure that mother and child fared well in the hospital after the birth. nuK extended its support in hospitals – and introduced the world’s first disposable teats for bottles, pre-disinfected and individually and hygienically packaged, which was critical for hospitals. However, the greatest innovation from nuK during this decade was the invention of a teat with a vent: no more swal- lowing air when drinking from the bottle and no more sore tummies. more and more mothers were working. technical progress.
