What you need to know about fever
23 Peace of mind in seconds It’s not easy seeing one’s own child ill. Parents would rather go through it all themselves than have their child feel poorly. unfortunately, this is not possible. Baby’s first fever may in fact be a positive indication of healthy development. THE FEVER BASICS: “my baby has a temperature – what should I do?” – young parents in particular feel anxious when their new-born child suddenly gets hot red cheeks and cries inconsolably. Parents feel this deep down inside. However: A fever is also something positive. It shows that baby’s body is able to actively respond to germs and mobilise its defences. Illness actually helps babies build their immune system. It’s an inevitable process. The important thing is to always keep an eye on how high the temperature is: everything is normal up to 37.5° celsius; up to 38.5° celsius is a slightly elevated temperature. It isn’t until 39° celsius that we begin to call it a high fever, no rare occasion among babies and toddlers. nuK developed the Baby thermometer Flash to especially suit the needs of parents and babies. It uses an infrared sensor to take the measure- ment without direct contact. simply hold the measuring tip about 3 cm away from the baby’s forehead and, in less than a second, it indicates how high the temperature is. this is very practi- cal at night – when the feverish baby has finally fallen asleep, taking the temperature does not wake the baby up. My child may have a temperature if… ... the face is hot and red, but the skin is otherwise cool and pale. ... the eyes look very tired and my child is sleepy. ... and/or my baby is fussy, does not respond to diversion and refuses nourishment.
